News items or events of note

1.       9 June 2009 - As most of us now know, Boggo Road will have its our road into the precinct named "Boggo Road", well in the latest of events there appears to be another name change also. Park Road Station appears to be under a lot of pressure to change its name to Boggo Road Station to conform with the newly designed precinct and 2 Division. This would most curtainly embed the name further into our history and preserve it for eternity. Q R are asking for comments on the idea, you can phone 07 3235 1516 and leave a recorded message. Bogga Road Junction may be a better option, and it rings with history.

'Long live the Road'.

2.      12 June 2009 - Queensland Corrective Services are now issuing there own Long Service Medal to recognise officers of their worthy length of service. The ribbon to the silver medal is very similar to that issued by the Prison Department with the colours conforming to the original. There will be a copy of this award on the memorabilia site in due time. Once I have information about qualifying period & service requirements it will be posted on this site. The criterian for the medal award is 15 years service and the 'catch to qualification' is you must still be serving. This now points to how much the QCS think of the service of previous officers. There is now a gap between the old and the new award, therefore many loyal officers will not be recognised for their contribution to the service of Queensland Prison/Corrections.

'Tradition Reinstated'

3.     24 June 2009 - The much anticipated re-opening of Boggo Road Museum has been delayed until about March 2011. This will not distract the BRGHS from preparing for its eventual re-opening.

'The wait will be worth it'

4.     2 August 2009 - Official opening of the Boggo Road Busway Tunnel on Sunday the 2 August 2009, between 10am - 2pm you will be able to walk the tunnel under Boggo Road Prison. The event is free with the coupon from the Sunday mail of the same day. This historical event is one that you will not want to miss, the distance of the tunnel is about 650 meters, that's the equivalent of one 'outside patrol'. Bus srevices through the tunnel will commence on Monday the 3 August 2009, linking Park Poad Station and the PAH.

'The Second tunnel at Boggo Road Prison'

This entry to the Boggo Road Busway Tunnel is at the Park Road Railway end (now Boggo Road Railway) .

The tunnel is 640 meters long and the new exit signage displays a man in the running posture, how apt for a tunnel under a prison. The signage displayed on the day states that the old prison above, only moved 10mm during construction.

How many walked the tunnel to get the get-out-of gaol free card, well yourstrully did!

The tunnel & train connection adjourning the prison site is a modern structure in design and the ramp onto Boggo Road Precinct is looking to be such an advantage for those travelling on public transport.

5         Convicts Confined to Containers  5 Feb 2010 - The latest from across the Tasman, is that prisoners will be confined in 'shipping containers' as from April. This is because the growth industry in New Zealand is convicted  criminals entering the prison system. Three cells with toilets, bunks and a table are made of steel with insulation and heating. One must wonder if there is an intention of placing these container cells on a container ship and hence floating them out to sea, interesting. Floating prisons have previously been used and now we see it all again. New Zealand has always been progressive in its convict containment, I look forward to seeing where this goes!
